Symptoms

Chlamydia

Known as the "silent" disease, it is likely that one will not experience symptoms. If left untreated, however, chlamydia can lead to various long- and short-term health-related complications. If symptoms are present, they will appear within 1 to 3 weeks of exposure and will include:

          Women

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Bleeding between menstrual periods

          Men

  • Discharge from penis
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Burning and itching around penis opening
  • Pain/swelling in the testicles (uncommon)

Gonorrhea

Like chlamydia, many individuals experience few or no symptoms. If left untreated, the disease can lead to serious health problems in both men and women. Symptoms that do arise include:

         Women

  • Painful or burning sensation when urinating
  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Bleeding between menstrual periods

          Men

  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • White, yellow, or green discharge from penis
  • Painful or swollen testicles

Syphilis

Despite the risk of late health complications, many individuals may not experience symptoms for years. Symptoms may include:

          Primary Stage

  • Appearance of small, round, painless chancres

          Secondary Stage

  • Rough, red-brown spots or other rashes
  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Sore throat
  • Hair loss
  • Headaches
  • Weight loss
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue

Late Stage, following a latent period
