Seasonal & H1N1 Flu: A Guide for Parents

What you can do to stay healthy

  • People can take everyday actions to stay healthy.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw tissue in the trash after use.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread that way.

  • Avoid close contact with sick people. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
  • If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

If you do get sick

If you have recently traveled to an area that is currently reporting H1N1 flu cases, or have been in close contact with someone who has AND you believe you are becoming ill with flu-like symptoms, contact your health care provider.
